GIS Techniques for Undergraduate Earth Science
Alexandra Moore, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Cornell University
This is a hands-on workshop for those who would like bring the power of geospatial analysis to an undergraduate
Earth science classroom. It is assumed that participants will have some familiarity with ArcView 3.2, either through
previous experience, or through participation in the morning workshop. We will focus on quantifying spatial relations
using ArcView's Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst functions, and on importing data from the web and other external
sources. Topics include plate tectonic processes, watershed studies, and landform analysis. We will pay special
attention to avoiding common GIS pitfalls. Data sets and lab activities will be available for participants to
take back to their classrooms following the workshop.
