ArcView GIS
Karon Batista, Herschel Sarnoff

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a powerful software mapping program that has the potential of revolutionizing education. With GIS, teachers have a dynamic mapping tool allowing them to create almost any required map. But the software does much more - empowering students to create, query and detect patterns involving demographic, historical and scientific data. The presentation will explore the uses of this revolutionary software in k12 classrooms.

This workshop will introduce the use of ArcView 3.2 incorporating a classroom project entitled, "My neighborhood". Participants will download and analyze GIS data about their own neighborhood using TIGER files.

If time permits, a second project involving visualizing data located with a handheld GPS receiver (the Magellan 2000), will be presented.
