Collection Building and Library Interoperability Using OAI.

John Weatherly and Katy Ginger

This workshop will provide an overview of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), a primary means of library interoperability being used at both DLESE and the NSDL. Participants will walk through the installation of a freely available 'out of the box' OAI software package developed at the DLESE Program Center (DPC). The workshop will touch upon two areas of library interoperability, including the sharing and harvesting of library collections via OAI and a look at the metadata formats being used at DLESE and the NSDL. Participants will get a hands-on view of OAI and be able to try harvesting and sharing metadata records with others using the software provided. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have the resources necessary to be able to begin sharing metadata collections with DLESE, the NSDL and other OAI-enabled digital libraries.
