Using writing and argumentation in inquiry activities
Dr. William Prothero (UCSB Geology), Dr. Greg Kelly, and Holly Dodson (UCSB Graduate School of Education).

One of the goals of using data in the classroom is to increase learners' understanding of science process. This can be accomplished by embedding the use of data into a pedagogy that includes scientific writing. Scientists formulate problems for investigation, plan data acquisition strategies, choose or acquire data, interpret their data in relation to a theory, present preliminary findings at science meetings, write their findings for publications, and review others' publications. This workshop will address a range of science process issues and focus on scientific argumentation in both oral and written learning activities.
