Description
Abstract
USGS:
The geology data set for this map includes arcs, polygons, and
labels that outline and describe the general geologic age and type of
bedrock of Iran. The geologic provinces data set includes arcs,
polygons, and labels of geologic and petroleum provinces interpreted
and designated by R.M. Pollastro from a number of literature and map
resources to assist in the assessment of oil and gas resources for the
USGS World Energy Project. The oil and gas field centerpoints data
set is a point coverage that marks the approximate centerpoints of oil
and gas fields in Iran. Political boundaries are provided to show the
general location of country and/or other reference 'political'
boundaries.
Cornell GIS:
This geology coverage was obtained by the Cornell University GIS
Group from USGS Open-File report 97-470G. This coverage was edited by
Cornell to conform with the Cornell GIS. The information in this
metadata file includes the original metadata as well as information
about edits performed by the Cornell GIS.
Purpose
The data provide government, geological community, consultants, and
the general public with the important geological base that is used to
define geologic provinces and oil and gas field assignments for USGS
Oil and Gas Assessment of the World.

Procedures_Used
USGS:
Geologic contacts are inked on mylar sheet placed on top of
source map on light table. Mylar sheet of traced geologic contacts is
scanned as TIFF format binary image. Binary image converted to
ARC/INFO grid. Linework is vectorized. Polygons are attributed with
geologic age and type.
Scan original paper map on large format Anatech Eagle scanner,
producing one gray-scale image in TIFF format at 200 dot/inch
resolution. Scanned image is converted to ARC/INFO grid by means of
the ARC/INFO imagegrid command. The grid is then transformed to
Lambert Conformal Conic projection with the ARC/INFO GRIDWARP command
(polynomial of the second order). The "from-to" links for
transformation are created with the ARC/INFO CONTROLPOINTS command,
where a latitude/longitude graticule (point coverage) with cell size 2
X 2 degrees is used as a reference.
Geologic contact coverage is cleaned and georeferenced.
Verification and correction of geologic age polygons, using grey-scale
image of Geological Survey of Iran source map as a backdrop guide.
Label attributes are populated in Arcedit. (This step is performed
simultaneously with verification of position of arcs and labels.) A
series of piecewise "rubbersheet" transformations are applied to the
ARC/INFO geologic coverage created after the verification of linework
and attribute values. The ARC/INFO coverages that are used for
transformation are ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3M GIS cartographic layers
(RIV3M, CTRY3M). To perform rubber transformation the combination of
ARC/INFO ARCEDIT ADD (links) and ADJUST commands are applied. There
are a number of such transformations for each selected area of
original coverage.
Major faults are digitized and attributed in Arcedit, using the
gray-scale image of the source map and the geologic age polygon
coverage as a background guide. Layout of "Map Showing Geology, Oil
and Gas Fields, Geologic Provinces, and Major Faults of Iran" is
produced in Arcplot, using the ARC/INFO coverages described in this
metadata file. Postscript and HPGL files are produced.
Layout of the "Province" map without geologic age is produced in
Arcplot. Postscript and HPGL files are produced. Adobe Acrobat
Portable Document file (PDF), iranmap.pdf is produced in Adobe Acrobat
Exchange using the postscript files of map showing geology, map
without geology and text files. The PDF file is used to generate tif,
gif and jpg files with Adober Phtoshop version 5.5.
Arcview shapefiles are produced in Arcview v3.0 from the coverages
described in this metadata file. An Arcview project and an
ArcExplorer project are created. ARC/INFO exchange format files
(.e00), "ungenerate" format text files (.gen), comma delimited
attribute files (.csv) and SDTS files are generated of the ARC/INFO
coverages described in this metadata file
Cornell GIS:
This coverage was edited by Cornell to conform with the Cornell GIS,
the attribute SYMBOL was added to the polygon coverage for plotting
purposes.
Revisions
Cornell GIS:
Cornell performed several updates discussed in the Procedures Used
section of this metadata file.
Reviews_Applied_to_Data
USGS:
Standard verification of attribute reliability is performed with the
Arc/Info command LABELERRORS to find polygons without assigned
character value or with more than one value.
A comparison between color plot and original paper map is carried
out by on-screen visual examination. The coverages are superimposed
on a registered and rectified gray-scale scanned image of the original
map and inspected. All errors detected in attributes are corrected.
As indicated above, some attibutes may be in error because I. Features
on geology coverage (ir_geo) are a result of combinations of
fillcolor, fillpattern and patterncolor on original map and are
subject to interpretation error. II. Poor printing quality of the
original map results in mismatches between polygon boundaries and
color. A best guess estimate approach is used in a number of cases to
ascertain the intended attribute on the original map.
Cornell GIS:
Cornell upadates were checked with the FREQUENCY command in
ARC/INFO, and with the select command in ARC EDIT.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
USGS:
The Data set is a collection of ARC/INFO coverages that are
topologically consistent. The fuzzy tolerance has been consistent
through each processing step (500). Based on this fuzzy tolerance
value all undershoots and overshoots were detected and deleted.
Execution of Arc/Info Clean command indicates the coverage is
topologically clean. Duplicate lines, overshoots and undershoots if
any are corrected. All polygons are closed and labeled. In some rare
cases very small polygons could be eliminated. Polygons at the edge
of the map are closed with a map estent polygon.

Completeness_Report
USGS:
The following generalizations of original geological map are
performed: 1. Several geological age subdivisions on original
1:2,500,000 geological map are combined into single units. For
example, all Jurrasic combined into one unit. 2. All the Precambrian
subdivisions are combined into one unit. The version of Geologic
Province Boundaries is correct as of April, 1999.
The geologic attribute data are assigned using standardized geologic
symbols for the World Energy project. The geology is simplified from
its original version. Since the emphasis of this study is an
evaluation of oil and gas resources, Precambrian units and other
non-petroleum bearing units are generalized more than younger units.
Positional_Accuracy
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
1. Original geological map is of 250 m. maximum accuracy (0.1 mm on
paper map of 1:2,500,000 scale)
2. Scanned images are of 200 dot/inch resolution (0.1 mm on paper).
Therefore fuzzy tolerance for CLEAN command in ARC/INFO is set to 500
meters (two pixels).
3. Several steps are taken to vectorize scanned images. The
projection information is given on the original map as "...adjusted
from Polyconic Projection of the International 1:1,000,000 Map of the
World." Because such projection is not supported by ESRI's ARC/INFO
software, it is necessary to georeference the map to a known
projection. This is done as follows
3.1. A latitude/longitude grid with cell size 2 * 2 degree is
projected to Lambert Conformal Conic projection and then used to
create an ARC/INFO point coverage. That point coverage is used to
create "to - from" links by means of the ARC/INFO CONTROLPOINTS
command.
3.2 A gray-scale scanned image converted to an Arc/Info grid of the
original paper map is transformed to Lambert Conformal Conic
projection by means of the ARC/INFO GRIDWARP command (polynomial of
the second order), using the "to - from" links created with the
CONTROLPOINTS command.
3.3 The source of the geologic contacts is a mylar sheet with the
linework traced from the source map on a light table. This mylar sheet
is scanned as a binary image and then vectorized with the ARC/INFO
GRIDLINE utility. The resulting coverage is projected to the Lambert
Conformal Conic projection, and then adjusted with the Arcedit adjust
command to match the rectified gray-scale image of the source map.
The vectorized coverage is edited and attributed in arcedit using the
gray-scale image of the source map as a background guide.
3.4 Polygon boundaries and geologic attributing of the ARC/INFO
coverage from step 3.3 are verified and corrected by comparison to the
grey-scale image background.
Overall position error was estimated by randomly selected set of
locations on the ESRI coverages and the same locations on the final
geology coverage (ir_geo). RMS error is 1.6 km (0.6 mm of the
original paper map) with a maximum error of about 6 km (2.4 mm on the
original paper map).

Overview_Description
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview
Overall accuracy is based on accuracy of general geology coverage.
Since all the attributes are of character type, only correctness of
polygon labeling can be provided (see below). 1. Attribute item "GLG"
is abstracted from fill colors and patterns of source map denoting
geologic age of surficial outcrops. Rock units whose age is divided
within a geologic period on the map are left undivided. For instance,
units labeled on the original map "Q" or "Q1" are attributed as "Q".
Units labeled as "PgN" are attributed as "T". Units labeled as "N1"
and "N2" are attributed as "N" (Neogene). Units labeled as "Pg1",
"Pg2", "Pg3" are attributed as "Pg" (Paleogene). Units spanning
Neogene and Paleogene are attributed as "T". All Precambrian units
are left undivided.
Units colored as acid igneous rocks, where age and type are not
clear, are attributed as "acid". The same is done for "basic" and
"inter". When age for igneous units is unclear, attributes are
assigned "ai", "bi and "ii" for corresponding acid, basic and
intermediate intrusive igneous rocks. A similar scheme is used for
volcanic rocks. Areas colored as surface water bodies are attributed
as "H2O". Sea and ocean are attributed as "Sea". Unmapped areas are
labeled as "U". Because of the poor quality of map printing, there are
many uncertainties in ascertaining the classification of polygons.
Where there are disagreements on the original map between the label
and the fill color, or where printing errors occur, the preference is
given to the label in attributing the unit. In some cases, a
judgement is made according to the inferred geologic trend.
Definitions for the values are found below in the entity and attribute
information section.
2. Standard verification of attribute reliability is performed with
the Arc/Info command LABELERRORS to find polygons without assigned
character value or with more than one value.
This is a deductive estimate based on based on a polygon overlay of
a coverage plot and the orignal materials. Checks by both the
compiler and an independent source identified labeling and
classification errors which are corrected. Any remaining errors are
most likey a result of misinterpretation of source data. Commonly,
this would be for small polygons with ambiguous color or patterns.
