Description
Abstract
USGS:
South America is part of Region 6 (Central and South America) for the
World Energy Assessment. The geologic map of South America was
digitized so that we could use the geology as a general guide to draw
the boundaries of the geologic provinces of South America.
Cornell GIS:
This Geology coverage was obtained by the Cornell University GIS
Group from USGS Open-File report 97-470D. This coverage was edited
by Cornell to conform with the Cornell GIS. The information in this
metadata file includes the original dataset metadata as well as
information about edits performed by the Cornell GIS Group.
Purpose
USGS:
The purpose of digitizing the geologic map was to allow us to have a
geologic base on which we drew the boundaries of the geologic
provinces of South America. The geologic map was used as a guide for
placing province boundaries rather than as a location map for very
specific geologic entities.
Supplemental_Information
Procedures_Used
USGS:
The geologic boundaries and a series of latitude-longitude points
of the source map were inked onto a mylar overlay, and the overlay was
scanned at 300 dpi using a large-format scanner to produce a TIFF
image file. The TIFF was converted into an Arc Grid, and then into an
Arc Vector coverage. The coverage was then transformed into a
bipolar-oblique projection. Approximately 5000 geologic polygons were
attributed with a scheme modified considerably from that of the source
map. The symbols for the geologic attribution were made from a
standard set developed for the World Energy Project.
Cornell GIS:
This coverage was edited by Cornell to conform with the
Cornell GIS. The attribute symbol was added for plotting purposes,
and the projection was changed from Bipolar Oblique Conic Conformal
to Geographic projection.

Reviews_Applied_to_Data
USGS:
A visual comparison was made between paper copies of the digital
geologic map and the source map. The horizontal accuracy of the
boundaries should not be considered accurate at a scale larger than
approximately 7500000.
Cornell GIS: Cornell updates were checked with the frequency command
in ARC/INFO, and with the select command in ARC EDIT.
***There are are over 300 poloygons without attributes in this
coverage. They are described by the USGS as unlabeled, with no other
information provided as to why they are unlabeled.******

plotting purposes.
