Description
Abstract
This data set is the digital geologic province layer map of the
world. The data set includes arcs, polygons, polygon labels, and
attributes for geologic provinces, as defined by the U.S. Geological
Survey.
The PROVWRLD coverage was obtained by the Cornell University GIS
Group from USGS Open-File report 97-470C. The World Province coverage
was edited by Cornell to conform with the Cornell GIS. The information
in this metadata file includes infomation supplied in the original
dataset metadata as well as information about edits performed by the
Cornell GIS. For the original dataset and its associated files refer
to USGS Open-File Report 97-0670C.
Purpose
This data set provides one of the strategic tools to assist in the
U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project. This digital geologic
province map was created specifically for the oil and gas assessment
of selected provinces of the World.

Procedures_Used
Procedures Used by the USGS:
Geologic contacts, faults, and rivers were traced from a paper
1:10,000,000 scale map on to mylar. The mylar was then scanned and
loaded into ESRIs ArcInfo GIS system for cleaning and attributing.
Topology was created. Attributes and contacts were verified via visual
editing and review. Some attributes were combined and some polygons
generalized.
Some attributes were combined and some polygons generalized because
much of the detailed attribute data and polygons were not needed for
this assessment project. The geologic coding scheme was based on the
World Energy Project standard which incorporates geologic age, and
general lithologic type. Some attribute errors may exist because of
cartographic difficulties in original map and inconsistancies between
source materials. Attributes and contacts were verified via visual
editing and review.
The geologic provinces are boundaries were subjectively interpreted
using the general geology as a reference and consist of areas with
similar geologic, geographic, structural, and/or petroleum
characteristics. U.S. Geological Survey. The CODE attribute is
strictly for reference and was derived by and for the USGS World
Energy Project.
Procedures Used by Cornell GIS:
The PROVWRLD coverage was obtained by the Cornell University GIS Group
from USGS Open-File report 97-470C. The World Province coverage was
edited by Cornell to conform with the Cornell GIS. Because the
original coverage was supplied in Albers Projection we were unable to
change the projection of the coverage with the PROJECT COVER command,
instead, to avoid distortion of the province polygons the Albers
projection was cut into two pieces, each piece was projected into
geographic projection and the new coverages were appended together.
The attributes were checked visually by compring hardcopies of the map
in both Albers and Geographic projections.
Revisions

Polygons and line work for the geologic provinces are drawn on a
digital geologic cover. The geologic base map is created from scanned
images of UNESCO geologic maps of the world. These maps are paper
1:5,000,000 and 1:10,000,000 scales. The geologic province maps are
not intended to be used at a scale of larger than 1:5,000,000! This
map is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with U.S.
Geological Survey editorial standards or with the International
Stratigraphic Guide.
