COLLECTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF GEOSCIENCE (SOLID EARTH) DATA SETS FOR THE NATIONAL SCIENCE DIGITAL LIBRARY

The goals of this research are (1) to collect, organize, maintain geoscience data sets for the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) system; and (2) to develop advanced user tools to manipulate, map, model, analyze, and visualize the collected data sets. We are specifically gathering data and information on the Solid Earth component of the geosciences and collaborate with other groups in oceanic and atmospheric sciences to achieve more complete geoscience data sets for the NSDL. In order to increase the usage of the content of the digital library in educational efforts and help in inquiry driven and engaging education, we plan to develop, test, and provide on-line access to easy-to-use dynamic tools to exploit the data sets collected. The results of the proposed efforts will help improve the quality of science education and will provide valuable tools for Earth System Science education.

We will not only make majority of our existing data sets available to the NSDL, but we will also gather and organize a variety of additional data sets and improve our Internet based data access and manipulation tools to improve the quality of education at all levels. Our expertise in developing Java applets to access and search databases will be helpful in developing quick, reliable, and efficient dynamic user tools that will help catalyze higher quality education.
